Industrial Site Converted to Greenspace

The AICCM site was part of the early 1930’s Oklahoma City Field No. 1. Multiple state agencies assisted with the environmental assessments and remediation that continue on the site to the present day. Over 56 oil and gas wells were drilled and completed on the property and were later abandoned. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission  plugged seven wells to current standards and identified two previously undocumented wells and the City of Oklahoma City has plugged six additional wells for a total of across the American Indian Cultural Center & Museum complex area.

Over the years, the site has been used for motorcross racing and illegal dumping. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality's Tire Reclamation Program removed and recycled more than 7,000 discarded tires that were discovered on the site. Continued partnerships with the City of Oklahoma City and other agencies are helping to make the AICCM vision a reality. Future cleanup will focus on the remaining areas of the site. The development of the 300 acre cultural park and green space will heal and revitalize this environmentally damaged land creating a safe and healthy public space for all.
